Jesus said, "Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built" (Luke 6:46-48 NASB).
"How Do We Make Love Stay?" We build the house on the rock, which is Christ, and His Words. The storms of life will come, so the house we call 'marriage' must be well built on a deep dug foundation. This book is written in defense of biblically defined marriage and attempts to layout the 'blueprint' for building and maintaining a joy-filled, God honoring marriage. The metaphor of a house is used throughout the book - site selection, choosing the right house, laying the right foundation, the blueprint, building materials - and we also include the 'tools' necessary for maintaining the house and keeping it in good working order for a life time after it has been built. Much of the content is addressed to those not yet married, since it is clear that the best way to build strong marriages is to do so before they begin, but we also provide the steps needed to repair marriages that might not have had the best start.
Pastor Den's ministry has spanned over 40 years and has included service as: a lay-witness missionary, an evangelist/itinerant preacher, youth pastor, singer/songwriter/bass player, leader of the contemporary worship band, "RECONCILED," a short-term missionary, teacher, writer, and most recently (since 2001) as a church planter/pastor and marriage counselor.
Pastor Den began his theology training in 1974 soon after high school at the Charismatic Bible Institute in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but changed course to become a soldier and a tent-making minister. In 1977 he married his 'little brown-eyed girl,' Terri, and they quickly became a family. Consequently, he didn't complete his undergraduate work until 1999. Pastor Den was in the inaugural LAMP class at Johnson Bible College and graduated Suma Cum Laude with a BS in Leadership And Ministry Preparation. He entered the MA program immediately upon graduation and earned an MA in 'NT and Preaching' in 2002. He now holds a second MA in Biblical Theology and is ABD on a PhD in Systematic Theology from Trinity Theological Seminary in Indiana.
Pastor Den spent 15 years (over 8 years on active duty) as a soldier and as a troop leader. He also coached baseball for several decades. His teachings, while always built around the exposition of Scriptures, are frequently colored with metaphors from his military background and/or his life as a coach. He was licensed as a church planter by MCUSA in November 2001 and was ordained as a pastor in June 2004. Additionally, Den is a Board Certified Pastoral Counselor with the American Association of Christian Counselors. Terri and Den are both certified facilitators for the "Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts" (SYMBIS) program. The two have been married 40 years and have 2 children and 6 grandchildren.
Some may ask, "Why a book on marriage when your academic background is in theology and biblical studies?" Fair enough. First, because the institution of marriage is under a direct attack from the enemy, and it must be defended. I'm an old soldier with 40 years of experience in making love stay, even in the heat of battle. Second, all of the principles in this book are based upon biblical truth. We call people to come to Jesus, to hear His words, and to put them into practice. That's how you "Make Love Stay!"
